music: Fiddler on the Roof - To Life

Sorry i haven't updated.
there's many reasons; mostly that my life has become busier and stressier.
but mostly because i don't have the music tolerance to find new music everyday.
there are other blogs that do that better than me.
what i'm going to strive to do, is share what i think is good.
it may be an album from years ago, last year, last month, or something that hasn't been released yet, that i had the good fortune of hearing.
but i can't find the newest stuff out there everyday. i've come to realize that.
anyways. enough of excuses.
i have some reviews and some links for you guys.
later this week, i'll have some pictures from some concerts i went to. (midlake, danielson, pilotdrift)

this is a priceless link i found from the [info]raconteurs
it's some live show recordings and the quality is actually very good.
best track is "broken toy soldiers"

Live Racontuers

One of my new friends on LJ has a band, and a myspace page. The music is very piano driven, and invokes Sarah McLachlan. Check out the 2nd song "The Middle"

Kat McKenzie

ok here is some of the newer cds i've bought, and what I think of them.
i know these are late in coming, but i don't see YOU reviewing cds and posting them.
actually some of you i do see doing that.
so i just suck
but read them anyways.

music: Starlight Mints

so i saw richard swift last wednesday
i was pleasantly surprised
see i decided to go see him cold turkey
having heard nothing by or about him.

from the concert, i recieved some very personal music, kinda poppy.
the lyrics hit close to home, and he had a great humility that connected well with the crowd.
he played a very short set, only about 4-5 songs, all just him and guitar.

talking with some friends and fellow indie nerds, i learned that he is part of the Secretly Canadian label, a label that includes Jens Lekman and Danielson.
his music usually includes lots of keyboards, and has a good pop feel to it.

anyways. enough of what i think, y'all decide for yourself.

Richard Swift Myspace

The Novelist - Richard Swift

Pitchfork.com as usual decided to rip into another favorite artist of mine.
Here's the song they hated
Backwoods - David Bazan

The reason they didn't like the song, is because the lyrics in the song go from Pedro the Lion sarcasm, to downright Bazan preaching.
i don't mind that.
what i do mind is that this is more of the same from Mr. Bazan.
same plodding drums and beat and same monotonous singing.
the sarcasm and wit is on display here as always, but i can't distiguish this from songs that he wrote 4 years ago.
i truly respect this guy and his words, but musically he can't get away from the now defunct Pedro the Lion sound.
i think he should make another Headphones album. that was a good direction for him.

speaking of which, here's a excellent song he wrote 4 years ago.
and it's live.
and in spain.

Options (live) - Pedro the Lion(David Bazan)

i can't explain how much i want to hear this.
this man doesn't write music for ears
he writes music for my soul
it doesn't fill a room
it fills my heart.
and his lyrics aren't just words.
they're my very thoughts.

man in black, aged in years.

it doesn't really matter

music: a mix

so i went to see the Record Hop the other night.
it was fantastic.
the show started at 10pm, when i arrived they were about to start.
i walk into Rubber Gloves in Denton, and the guitars start roaring from the start. Pre-90's grunge starts to fill the room and the lead singer, Ashley comes to the mike and starts to sing with a throaty, husky voice that reminds more than one person of Kim Gordon and Karen O. They played play a set of about 6-7 songs, mostly off their album Pareidolia.
The easiest comparison for sound The Record Hop throws upon the fans would be Sonic Youth's early album "Dirty". With beautful feedback noise and talented drumming, the crowd called for louder and more.
after their set, i caught a hold of Scott their lead guitarist and he led me into a room full of Tron video games and Dig Dug sounds.
The Record Hop Interview )

here's their my space. go see and show and please buy their albums.
and listen.
that's the most important thing.

mmmmm

music: Rush - Tom Sawyer

because i don't talk about midlake enough, here is their new music video for "Young Bride"

Young Bride - Midlake

ok.
i am definitely going to see the record hop tomorrow.
barring any natural disasters.
so you will have pictures and reviews and stuff from that.
yes. i hotlinked. i know. i'm lame.

i went and saw Pixar's Cars today.
it was cute. not as gorgeous as Finding Nemo, but fun none-the-less.

tomorrow will be spent playing/practicing guitar and thinking of 5 good quick interview question for Voot Cha and Record Hop.

quote of the day.
(a verbal exchange between me and coffee house chicks)

coffee house chick#1: so we're looking for people to play on saturday nights.
me: really? i've started playing guitar and i wouldn't mind playing some time when i gain some confidence.
coffee house chick#2: really? what type of songs do you play?
me: well i just got started, so i'm mostly doing johnny cash covers. actually my wife and i separated recently, so i'll be doing LOTS of johnny cash covers.
coffee house chick#1: *snorts in my sandwich*
me: uhh.....can i have a different sandwich?
coffee house chick#2: why?
me: .....

lame i know. but i thought it was funny.
as funny as me walking into a starbucks this morning, unaware that 15 hOOters girls were in there. man i had to suck the gut in for like 20 min.

*edit* my son is watching with the Rush record i bought spin around in the record player. with much fascination. it's cute. *end edit*
